Journey Sunday School Class

Curriculum for 2010/2011

Through 2/14/10 we will continue in James W. Moore’s Moments That Take Your Breath Away.  This will take us through chapter 7 leaving us 5 chapters to pick up later in the year.

“As the saying goes, ‘It’s not the number of breaths we take, it is the number of moments that take our breath away.’  Every now and then, and more often than we realize, God breaks into the routine and gives us one of those awesome moments, so powerful, so amazing, so beautiful that time seems to stand still.”

2/21/10 – 4/3/10 we will be using James A. Harnish’s 7 session Lenten study entitled Radical Renovation Living the Cross-Shaped Life: A Lenten Study for Adults.

“This Lenten study based on Mark’s Gospel is centered on the theme of an extreme life makeover.  It looks at the kind of radical renovation that happens in our lives when we decide to follow Jesus on his way to the cross.

We are looking at a study on prayer entitled The Beautiful Work of Learning to Pray.  This 96 pg. book contains 31 lessons that we propose to use periodically throughout the year occasionally doing 2 or 3 in a row.

“Prayer is not easy, yet learning to pray can be learned.  The Beautiful Work of Learning to Pray is a brief but probing guide into the life of prayer.  James Howell examines the many barriers to prayer (such as our busyness, how uncomfortable with silence we are, our doubts and fears) and invites the reader to take a fresh approach to the devotional life.

After the Harnish Lenten study we will be moving into Adam Hamilton’s new series 24 Hours That Changed the World.  This series will be on DVD.  We did an Adam Hamilton many years ago and everyone enjoyed his DVD.  He is a great preacher and presenter and I think the change of pace will be good.  I don’t know how many lessons are in this series but this will easily take us into the summer.

“Join Adam Hamilton as he guides you from the Last Supper to Gethsemane, to the trial, to the crucifixion.  Experience and understand the significance of Jesus’ final hours in ways you never have before.  The DVD video journey features Adam Hamilton teaching from the Holy Land site of Jesus’ last 24 hours.”

We will finish James Moore over the summer and continue to go through the lessons on prayer.

We are planning on another Adam Hamilton starting 10/10 entitled Seeing Gray When Faith and Politics Meet.  This is a 5 session study – DVD – that will conclude on November 14th.  Our goal was to being doing this over Election Day which is 11/2.

“Adam Hamilton’s best-selling Seeing Gray in a World of Black and White prompted people of faith into more thoughtful conversations on the political, moral, and religious issues that divide us.”

The 5 session video covers the following topics:
Where Faith and Politics Meet
Christ, Christians and Culture Wars
How Should We Live?  The Ethics of Jesus
Spiritual Maturity and Seeing Gray
What Would Jesus Say to America?

We will finish this year with a study from the Kerygma series entitled Halleluiah:  The Bible and Handel’s Messiah.  We will do this the 4 Sundays in Advent – 11/28 and 12/5, 12 & 19.

Halleluiah explores the scriptural texts of Handel’s Messiah with four sessions on the Advent texts and six sessions on the Lenten texts.”

Advent:
Comfort, comfort my People
Who shall abide the day of his coming
For unto us a child is born
Glory to God in the highest

This book also has a Lenten study that runs 6 weeks that we will use for Lent 2011.  It will start on 3/13 & run through 4/17

Lent:
Behold the Lamb of God
He trusted in God
Who is the King of Glory?
I know that my Redeemer liveth
Why do the nations rage?
Hallelujah, worthy is the lamb, Amen
